5 Tips to Help Your Kids Stay Healthy This School Year

5 Tips to Help Your Kids Stay Healthy This School Year

The new school year is in full swing, and while this is an exciting and occasionally stressful time for all parties, school can also mean that your child will be exposed to an assortment of sickness-causing germs.

Our Drama Kids team wants to help make sure your family doesn’t become the next host of seasonal colds and flu, so we’ve found some tips that will help protect your child from germs while at school and participating in various after-school activities.

Did you know that according to a study by the Public Health and Safety Organization, a school basketball could have a germ count reading of over 13,900? A water fountain was found to have a germ count of 2,335. Germs are everywhere, but these 10 tips can help your child stay healthy.

  1. Wash hands the proper way.Yes, you likely know this one already, but a refresher never hurts. Make sure your kids are washing their handsin warm water, lathering up the soap, and then getting their palms, backs of hands, and fingers soaped up for the amount of time it would take to sing “Happy Birthday” twice, before rinsing their hands and using a paper towel to dry them.
  2. Don’t share water bottles, food or other things that may go in the mouth.Sharing is caring, but not where germs are concerned. Make sure your kids know to not share anything that may go into their mouth with their classmates.
  3. Guard the eyes, mouth and nose. It’s easy to touch something that has been handled by another sick student. Because of this, it’s important your kids learn to limit the touching of their eyes, mouth and nose. Doing so could help them avoid illnesses like colds or pink eye.
  4. Embrace healthy after-school snacks.Proper nutrition plays a vital role in your kids’ overall health and well-being, and providing them with healthy after-school snacksis a great way to give them an extra boost. Look for ideas that incorporate fruits and veggies and don’t let a busy schedule get in the way good nutrition.
  5. Know when to keep them home. You don’t want your kids coming down with anything, but it can happen. If they have come down with something, it’s always courteous to other children and parents to keep them at home. Here are some symptoms that can merit a sick day:
  • Vomiting or diarrhea
  • A fever above 100 degrees within the past 24 hours
  • An unexplained rash
  • Severe cough

A healthy child is a happy child, and with the help of these tips, your child may be able to stave off the typical back-to-school and seasonal illnesses that are always so common. Your friends at Drama Kids International hope that the school year has gotten off to a smooth start and that all are happy and healthy in your home!

Changes You’ll Notice in Your Child Thanks to Drama Classes

You know we like to say the difference you’ll see in your child after becoming a member of the Drama Kids International Family is “dramatic,” but it’s not just a fun play on words, it’s 100 percent accurate!

Children enrolled in our drama classes are not only learning and honing their drama skills but will also see positive changes and growth in areas that will benefit them for life.

So what exactly are the benefits that can be gained through drama classes? It starts with increased academic performance and a healthy imagination, but that is just the tip of the iceberg.

Below are three of the top changes for the better you’ll notice in your child after he or she becomes involved with Drama Kids:

  1. An understanding of different viewpoints. It’s a great big world we live in, made up of many different personalities and people. This can be reflected in the differing personalities that are found in our programs. By portraying a character, children are introduced to the process of understanding feelings, viewpoints and personality traits that are often not like their own. Being able to understand and appreciate different viewpointsis a skill that will help your child later on in life, whether it’s in regard to relationships, conflict resolution or even business negotiation.
  2. Increased confidence. Our drama programs are designed with a child’s confidence and self-esteem in mind, and you’ll notice a change in confidence level rather quickly! By providing a safe and supportive space for children to explore their imagination, we are also helping them become more confident and comfortable with who they are growing into.
  3. Better communication skills. Our drama programs offer children the chance to improve their public speaking and communication skills in every class, because after all, practice makes perfect! Whether working on improv or reciting lines, communication is a key aspect of Drama Kids International and something that is always being worked on by our students. Excellent communication skillscan help children do better in school and, later on in life, help them in the workforce.

There are many more opportunities for personal growth for children involved with Drama Kids International besides those listed here. Interested in learning about what our programming can offer your child? Feel free to contact us to learn more!
